Better Late Than Never…

UGA has officially been in session for 3 weeks!  That means only 14 more weeks until December Graduation (not that we’re counting)! It’s been a very busy start, from visits to Montana to retreats and the start of club meetings.  Here’s a little bit of what we’ve been up to and what you can look forward to:

UGA Goes to the 2013 North American Envirothon!  Two of our staffers cheered on the Georgia team competing against 48 other states, 8 Canadian provinces, and 1 Canadian territory in 5 natural resource topics: Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatics, Soil, and Rangeland Management.  Why was Warnell there? Warnell is very involved in the regional and state level competitions in Georgia – we even host a regional competition out at our teaching forest.  It just so happens, that the information learned through participating in the Envirothon is very similar to what our college student’s learn.  Many Enviothoners have a passion for natural resource management, and many become Warnell graduates.  UGA is also hosting the 2014 competition.  Next summer, the North American Envirothon takes over Georgia and we wanted to get prepared.  Our staff, along with a representative from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Design, jetted off to Montana to gather information and see first-hand what we should expect for next year!  Montana was especially gracious and planned a whole day spent in Yellowstone National Park; the perfect field trip for a bunch of nature nerds like us!

Student Ambassador Training kicked off the first weekend school was in session.  Twenty-three, juniors, seniors, and grad students began their journey as Warnell’s student recruitment and outreach team.  Along with learning the ins and outs of communicating with prospective students, alumni, and other audiences, the Ambassadors were certified in a national education curriculum called Project Learning Tree (PLT).  Thanks to a former Ambassador and Warnell Grad, Ani Popp, we received a grant for PLT certification.  It was an epic weekend and a great start to Fall 2013!

Club meetings have begun!  If you haven’t had a chance to check out one (or all) of our student organizations, now is the time to get on it! Check out our event calendar for upcoming socials and meetings.
